Huancaya, a town located in the central highlands of Peru, is a place rich in history and ancestral traditions, with dreamlike landscapes and waterfalls.
Huancaya has been inhabited by the Yauyos, who left their mark on the architecture, ceramics, and beliefs. During the colonial era, it was part of Francisco Pizarro’s encomienda. The colonial bridge, built during that period, is a testament to its past. Over the centuries, the inhabitants of Huancaya have resisted change and preserved their cultural integrity. The mixture of indigenous and Spanish traditions has shaped their unique identity. Don’t miss the religious festivities with the Lord of the Ascension, which take place in May and bring the community together in processions, dances, and rituals, such as the huaylia and the qashwa. Music and colorful costumes are a fundamental part of these festivities.
You can’t miss its rich cuisine, which reflects the richness of the Andes. Dishes such as shrimp chupe, pachamanca, and stuffed rocoto peppers are part of its culinary tradition.
You can buy beautiful handicrafts such as textiles, ceramics, and wood carvings. They create unique pieces that reflect their connection with nature.
In short, the customs and traditions of Huancaya are a showcase of Peru’s cultural richness. Music, dance, crafts, cuisine, and ancestral beliefs are elements that make this town a special and charming place.
